Torres del Paine Travel Guide

This Torres del Paine travel guide starts on the ground, on a scree slope, not behind a desk. I didn’t understand what “the wind” meant until I was on my hands and knees on a scree slope in southern Chile, laughing because it was either that or cry. I went in early November 2023 with a friend who was just as unprepared for it as I was. Patagonia doesn’t ease you in.

Getting There

Fly into Santiago first, then connect to Punta Arenas — it’s about a 3.5-hour hop. I actually flew straight into Puerto Natales’ tiny airport (Teniente Julio Gallardo), where a friend who lives locally picked me up right at the gate, which felt like cheating in the best way. If that connection isn’t running when you go, buses cover Puerto Natales to the park daily between October and April, and renting a car is worth it if you want the flexibility to chase the light instead of a bus schedule.

When to Go

Chilean Patagonia flips the calendar on you — summer runs December through February, and the trekking season stretches October to April. I went in early November and would pick March or April if I went back: fewer crowds, calmer wind. That wind isn’t a throwaway warning, either — in November 2025, a sudden blizzard with gusts over 190 km/h killed five hikers in the park (The Guardian), which is the kind of thing that makes the packing section below more than flavor text.

Where to Stay

I based myself at Rio Serrano Hotel & Spa for 5 nights. CONAF requires proof of accommodation for every night on the W Trek (torres-del-paine.com). In Punta Arenas, 2 nights at Hostal Boutique Patagonia Mística. In Santiago, 3 nights at Hotel De Blasis in Providencia — dinner at Chipe Libre, a pisco bar in Barrio Lastarria, is non-negotiable.

What to Do

The W Trek runs 4–5 days, about $2,700 mid-budget (Jtreks). Shorter on time? Mirador Las Torres is a demanding single-day hike (GetYourGuide). A catamaran to Grey Glacier is another option. Watch for guanacos, Andean condors, and even pumas (Journey Latin America). In Punta Arenas, I had a Magdalena Island penguin tour booked — weather cancelled it (TorresDelPaine.com). Still spent a day along the Strait of Magellan itself.

Packing for Patagonia’s Wind

Base winds run 60–80 km/h, gusting to 100–120 km/h in narrow passes (Samuel & Audrey). Pack a real waterproof shell, aluminum trekking poles, broken-in boots, wrap-around sunglasses, and a dry bag for camera gear.

Bea’s Honest Take

I went in early November, right at the start of spring. If I go back, I’d try March or April instead. Don’t treat Torres del Paine as a quick add-on — give the park the days it deserves.
